Why in the  news?

Recently two Badami Chalukya temples of at least 1300 to 1500 years old and 1200 years old labeled inscriptions have been discovered on the banks of Krishna River at Mudimanikyam village in Nalgonda district of Telangana.

Important points:

  • These temples and the label inscriptions were discovered by the team of Dr MA Srinivasan and S Ashok Kumar, General Secretary, Public Research Institute for History, Archeology and Heritage (PRIHAH).
  • Another inscription, dated 1673 AD, is located on two sides of the pillar in the Rama temple at Mudimanikyam.
  • The inscription on one side is legible, while the reverse is completely worn away.
  • This inscription provides detailed information about the donation.
  • Lord Ji Lal Indra has described the Chalukyas of Vatapi as the successors of the Huns.

About label inscription :

  • The label inscription, Badami, is dated to the 8th or 9th century AD during the Chalukya period.
  • Which is read as 'Gandaloranru'.
  • It is inscribed on a pillar of a group of five temples in the village.
  • However, the exact meaning of the label inscription is not yet clear, as the first two letters "Ganda" mean "hero" in Kannada.
  • This could possibly be a heroic title.

  • Since the label's inscription dates back to the 8th or 9th century CE, this group of five temples is known as Panchakuta.
  • The dating of this group of five temples can also be considered to be the late Badami Chalukya period.
  • In one of the temples the Shiva Linga is missing, while in another temple the idol of Vishnu is lying down.
  • All these temples are currently not in use for worship and are inaccessible.
