Why in the news?

Recently, the second edition of World Food India was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

Important points:

• Prime Minister Modi talked about the food processing industry emerging as a "sunrise sector" in India.
• World Food India 2023 has Netherlands as the partner country and Japan as the focus country of the programme.
• Food processing industry has emerged as the emerging sector in India and the country ranks 7th with total export value of more than USD 50,000 million.

About World Food India 2023:

• The first edition of World Food India was held in 2017.
• It will showcase the royal culinary heritage of regional cuisine and traditional Indian cuisine.
• The event will host 48 sessions focusing on various aspects of the food processing industry with emphasis on financial empowerment, quality assurance and innovations in machinery and technology.
• World Food India 2023 will also showcase AYUSH products developed by AYUSH startups.
• World Food India 2023 aims to showcase India as the 'Food Basket of the World' and celebrate 2023 as the International Year of Millets
• Also to provide a platform to various stakeholders to promote investments, partnerships and establishments.

Participant in World Food India 2023

• Over 80 countries, 200 speakers and 12 partner ministries, departments and commodity boards will participate in the three-day event, which will conclude on November 5 in the presence of President Draupadi Murmu.

Importance of World Food India 2023:

• On the first day of World Food India 2023, a total of 16 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) and various industry bodies.
• A total investment of approximately Rs 17,990 crore was made under these agreements.

It will provide a networking and business platform for government bodies, industry professionals, farmers, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders to engage in discussions, establish partnerships and explore investment opportunities in the agri-food sector.
