Why in the news?

    Recently the World Energy Jobs 2023 report was released by the International Energy Association.

Important points:

  • On November 15, 2023, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released the Second Edition of the World Energy Employment (WEE 2023) report.
  • In which it was reported that for the first time globally in 2021, clean energy jobs overtook fossil fuel jobs.
  • Clean energy jobs now represent more than half of all energy sector jobs.
  • The country created the fourth-highest number of new clean energy jobs in the past three years.

About the World Energy Employment 2023 Report:

  • This annual report shows energy sector employment by sector, fuel, technology and value chain.
  • The World Energy Employment Report 2023 includes for the first time employment data for the extraction of selected critical minerals, including copper, cobalt, nickel and lithium.
  • The 2023 report measures energy employment needs across IEA scenarios against a 2030 outlook, outlining key policies that can help countries develop and retain a skilled energy workforce during the energy transition.

Conclusion of the World Energy employment 2023 Report:

  • Global employment in the energy sector is expected to rise by 3.4 million from pre-pandemic levels to 67 million in 2022.
  • “Clean energy sectors added 4.7 million jobs globally over the same period to reach 35 million.
  • Fossil fuel jobs recovered more slowly after layoffs in 2020 and remain at 32 million, about 1.3 million below pre-pandemic employment levels.
  • Job growth in clean energy as well as fossil fuel sectors in India remained positive compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
  • The report mentions five key sectors of the energy industry that generated maximum employment after the pandemic.
    • These sectors were solar PV, wind, electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing, heat pumps and critical minerals.
  • These five sectors employ approximately 9 million workers.
  • Among all the sectors, Solar PV has emerged as the largest sector with around 4 million jobs.
  • On the other hand, manufacturing of EVs and their batteries was the biggest source of growth.
    • EVs and batteries saw the fastest growth, with more than 1 million jobs added since 2019.
  • Construction and manufacturing contribute more than half of current energy jobs, with an increase of 2.6 million jobs since 2019.
  • The energy sector demands highly skilled workers; 36% of energy jobs are in high-skilled occupations, compared to 27% in the broader economy.

India in the report:

  • Clean energy jobs drove global energy jobs growth over the past three years, but some regions, including India, Indonesia and the Middle East, saw growth in fossil fuel employment.
  • Notably, India also created the fourth highest number of new clean energy jobs during 2019-22.
  • India ranks third globally in the number of energy workers, after China and the Asia-Pacific region.
