Why in the news?                        

On November 25, 2023, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India organized 'Social Empowerment Camp' at 20 locations across the country.

Important points:

  • It is being organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPWD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, through Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO).
  • The event will be streamed live on ALIMCO's official YouTube channel from 11am onwards.

About Social Empowerment Camp:

  • Social Empowerment Camp will be organized at 20 locations covering 09 states.
  • All the camps will be connected to each other online.
  • In an effort to empower disabled persons and senior citizens of the country, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is organizing 'Samajik Empowerment Camps'.
  • 'Samaj Adhikarita Shivir' aims to distribute various types of assistive devices to more than 50000 pre-identified persons with disabilities (Divyangjan) under the ADIP (Assistance to Persons with Disabilities in Procurement/Fitting of Aids and Devices) scheme of the Government of India.

Objective:

  • The objective of organizing these camps is to create a perspective for an inclusive society across the country, ensuring empowerment and dignified life for persons with disabilities.
  • To provide equal opportunities to persons with disabilities, so that they can lead productive, safe and dignified lives.

Equipment to be delivered:

The objective of these assistive devices is to make the beneficiaries self-reliant and empower them to integrate into the mainstream of society. A variety of accessories will be distributed…

  • These include motorized tricycles, hand-powered tricycles, folding wheelchairs, walkers, walking sticks, Braille kits, rollators, BTE hearing aids, clamshell chairs, sensor based electronic accessible canes, smartphones, Braille kits, ADL kits.
  • Aids for leprosy and prostheses and callipers for handicapped persons.

Other major initiatives taken by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment:

  • 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan': Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in collaboration with Department of Border Management, Ministry of Home Affairs to launch 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' in 17,000 border villages in 18 States/Union Territories in May 2023
    • NMBA was launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on 15 August 2020 and was first implemented in 372 vulnerable districts based on the findings of a comprehensive national survey and inputs received from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
  • Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme: To organize Pre-Matric Scholarship Schemes online for SC and others.
  • National Overseas Scholarship: The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment has increased the number of seats under National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) from 100 to 125.
  • PM-Yashasvi: The objective of this scheme is to identify and promote quality education among the students belonging to OBC, EBC and DNT categories by providing them full financial assistance.
    • The scheme will cover OBC/EBC/DNT students to study from class 9th to 12th in a reputed school selected by the government.
  • Pradhan Mantri Scheduled Caste Abhyudaya Yojana (PM AJAY): Pradhan Mantri Scheduled Caste Abhyudaya Yojana (PM-AJAY) is an amalgamation of three erstwhile schemes of this Department, namely, Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana (PMAGY), Special Central Assistance to Scheduled Castes Sub-Scheme (SCSP). SCA) and Babu Jagjivan Ram Chhatra Yojana (BJRCY).
    • Which will be implemented as components of a merged plan for better convergence and best utilization of resources.
  • Atal Vayo Abhyudaya Yojana (AVYAY).
  • Scheme of Ta Award for outstanding services in the field of prevention of alcohol and drug abuse.
  • Entrepreneurship Schemes of NBCFDC
  • Credit Enhancement Guarantee Scheme for Scheduled Castes (SC).

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment:

  • The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is entrusted with the welfare, social justice and empowerment of the deprived and marginalized sections of the society.
  • The ministry is headed by Cabinet Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar and consists of three Ministers of State namely Shri A. Narayanaswami, K.M. Assistance is provided by.
