Why in the news?

Sahitya Akademi has announced its annual Sahitya Akademi Awards 2023 in 24 languages.

 

Important points:

  • Sahitya Akademi Award, the symbol of which is a casket containing an engraved copper plaque, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000.
  • The awards will be presented to the winners at a function to mark 70 years of the Sahitya Akademi in New Delhi on March 12, 2024

 

About Sahitya Akademi Award 2023:

  • Tamil writer Rajasekaran (Devibharathi), Telugu writer T. Patanjali Sastry and Malayalam litterateur EV Ramakrishnan have been declared recipients of the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 2023.
    • Among the award winners, Rajasekaran was recognized for his novel Neeravazhi Paduvum, Sastri for his Telugu short story collection Rameshwaram Kakulu Marikoni Kathalu, and Ramakrishnan for his literary study Malayala Novelinte Deshakalangal.
  • This year, the Sahitya Akademi Awards have honored nine poetry books, six novels, five short story collections, three essays and one literary study for their outstanding contributions.
    • Poetry: Awards for poetry collections went to Vijay Verma (Dogri), Vinod Joshi (Gujarati), Manshoor Banihali (Kashmiri), Ashutosh Parida (Oriya), Swarnjit Savi (Punjabi), Gaje Singh Rajpurohit (Rajasthani), Vinod Asudani (Sindhi). Will be given. ), and Arun Ranjan Mishra (Sanskrit)
    • Novels: Bengali author Swapnamoy Chakraborty for his novel Joler Upor Pani, Neelam Saran Gaur for his English novel Requiem in Raga Janaki, and Sanjeev for his novel Mujhe Pahachano in the Hindi category and Krishnat Khot (Marathi), Rajasekaran (Devibharti).     • Short Story: Pranab Jyoti Deka (Assamese), Nandeshwar Daimary (Bodo), Prakash S. Parienkar (Konkani), Tarasin Baski (Turia Chand Baski) (Santali) and T. Patanjali Sastri (Telugu).
    • Essays: Scholar Lakshmisha Tolapadi for his Kannada essay collection Mahabharata Anusandhanad Bharatyatra and Basukinath Jha (Maithili) and Judhabir Rana (Nepali).
    • Literary Studies: E.V. Ramakrishnan (Malayalam)
  • The awards, spanning 24 languages, were recommended by an eminent jury and approved by the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi.
  • The selection criteria included books first published between January 2017 and December 31, 2021.

About Sahitya Akademi:

  • Sahitya Akademi Awards were established on March 12, 1954.
  • It was awarded for the first time in 1955.
  • Sahitya Akademi functions as an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Culture, committed to promoting literature in Indian languages.
  • The Sahitya Akademi Award is the second highest literary honor given by the Government of India after the Gyanpeeth Award.
  • To receive this award the author must be of Indian nationality.

 

Selection Process:

  • The main awards/language honors are conducted through a rigorous and confidential process under the supervision of experts.
  • This body includes one writer selected from each of the 24 regional languages.
  • Each member suggests 200 names, after which an expert committee finalizes 50 in the first phase.
  •  In the next step 5 is selected and finally, one out of five is selected.
