  Why in the news?

The PM Vishwakarma Scheme, launched by the Centre, has received over 21 lakh applications in two and a half months, data from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) show.

Important points:

  • Under this scheme, 41 master trainers from 10 states were being trained in the first phase.
  • 10 states: Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh

Honor to 26 Vishwakarma Gurus under PM Vishwakarma Scheme:

  • Minister of Education & Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Shri Dharmendra Pradhan felicitated 26 expert artisans and craftsmen during the 'Fere Ceremony of Vishwakarma Gurus' under PM Vishwakarma Scheme.
  • These honorees will further act as brand ambassadors of PM Vishwakarma Yojana and will also be provided opportunities to become master trainers and trainers in their respective trades.
  • PM Vishwakarma Guru can bring a lot of personal experiences and learnings to those who can benefit from this scheme.
  • Driven by the vision of making the Guru-Shishya tradition more scalable, accessible and innovative in its incarnation, the artisans will be trained in modern tools, design elements and latest technologies to transform them into master trainers.

About the PM Vishwakarma Yojana.

  • The PM Vishwakarma Yojana was launched by the Prime Minister at the India International Convention and Expo Center in New Delhi on September 17, 2023.
  • The PM Vishwakarma Yojana will be jointly operated by the Ministry of MSME, Skill Development and Finance.
  • This scheme was announced in the Union Budget for 2023-24.
  • PM Vishwakarma Yojana is fully funded by the Central Government with an allocation of Rs 13,000 crore for the year 2023-24 to 2027-28.
  • This scheme has been started especially for the traditional artisans and craftsmen from the lower level of the society.
  • People engaged in 18 types of traditional work have been included under PM Vishwakarma Yojana.
  • Under this scheme, financial assistance will be given to traditional artisans and craftsmen.

Eligibility & coverage:

  • It is available for rural and urban artisans and craftsmen across India.
  • It covers 18 traditional crafts Five lakh families will be covered in the first year and 30 lakh families over five years

18 traditional businesses included in PM Vishwakarma Yojana.

  • Carpenters, boat makers, weapon makers, blacksmiths, locksmiths (repairmen), hammer and toolkit makers, goldsmiths, potters, sculptors, cobblers, masons, basket, mat, broom makers, traditional dolls and toys. Makers, barbers, garland makers, washermen, tailors, fishnet makers

Objective of PM Vishwakarma Yojana.

  • PM Vishwakarma Yojana aims to economically enrich the artisans and craftsmen as well as keep the tradition and culture of India alive and prosperous through the local products, arts and crafts prepared by them.
  • To strengthen and nurture the Guru-Shishya parampara, or family-based practice of traditional skills by artisans and craftspeople working with their hands and tools.

Features of PM Vishwakarma Yojana.

  • After receiving PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card, artisans and craftsmen will be given assistance of Rs 15,000 from the government to buy modern tools.
  • Apart from this, under PM Vishwakarma Yojana, loans up to Rs 3 lakh will be given to the beneficiaries at concessional rates in two phases for digital transactions and marketing assistance.
  • Under the first phase of PM Vishwakarma Yojana, a loan of Rs 1 lakh will be provided to the workers at 5% interest rate. At the same time, in the second phase this amount will be increased to Rs 2 lakh.
  • Under the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, training will also be given to artisans and craftsmen associated with 18 traditional professions.
  • Under this scheme, two types of training (Basic and Advanced) will be provided.
  • An allowance of Rs 500 per day will also be provided by the government during training.

Importance of PM Vishwakarma Yojana.

  • About 30 lakh traditional artisans across the country will benefit through the PM Vishwakarma Yojana.
  • Under this scheme, artisans will be provided incentives and market support in digital transactions.

Vishwakarma Yojana will focus on improving the quality of products and services of artisans and craftsmen and expanding the reach of people to these products domestically and globally.
