Why in news:

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently signed between India and Tanzania has been approved.

Important points:

  • MeitY is collaborating with many countries and multilateral agencies to promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the ICT sector.
  • During this period, MeitY has entered into MOUs/MOCs/Agreements with its counterpart organizations/agencies from various countries to promote cooperation and exchange of information in the ICT domain.
  • This is in line with various initiatives taken by the Government of India such as Digital India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India etc. to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.

About the Agreement:

  • The Cabinet approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and Tanzania on cooperation in the field of sharing successful digital solutions implemented at population scale for digital transformations.
  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was apprised of an MoU signed on 09th October, 2023.
  • This MoU on cooperation in the field of sharing successful digital solutions implemented at population scale for digital transformation is signed between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of India and the Ministry of Information, Communications and Information Technology of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Purpose of the agreement:

  • The MoU aims to promote closer cooperation and exchange of experiences, digital technology-based solutions in the implementation of digital transformation initiatives of both the countries.

Importance:

  • The activities contemplated in this MoU will be financed through the regular operating allocation of their administration.
  • Both G2G and B2B bilateral cooperation will be enhanced in the area of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).
  • This MoU envisages better cooperation in promoting employment opportunities in the field of IT.

About Tanzania:

  • The name Tanzania is derived from the two nations of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which merged to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964.

Its name was changed to the United Republic of Tanzania later that year.
