Why in news:

INS Tarmugli, a fast attack ship, has been commissioned into the Indian Navy recently in a ceremony held at the Naval Dockyard.

Important points:

  • The ship has the distinction of serving under the flags of two countries with three names during its service so far.
  • The ship was commissioned as INS Tilanchang, later gifted to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and commissioned as MCGS Huravee.
  • INS Tarmugli is commanded by Commander Satpal Singh Sangwan and will serve under the Officer-in-Charge of the Navy (Andhra Pradesh).

About INS Tarmugli:

  • INS Tarmugli is the first Follow-on Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (WJFAC), an upgraded version of the WJFAC, which was earlier produced by GRSE.
  • It is constructed by M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE).
  • INS Tarmugli has been indigenously designed and built.
  • It will be re-commissioned as INS Tarmugli on 14 December after renovation and refit by the Indian Navy.
  • It will be deployed for coastal patrol and surveillance operations on the east coast of India.
  • It is named after INS Tarmugli, a picturesque island in the Andaman group.
  • The ship was active in service till the year 2006, and was thereafter gifted to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) by the Central Government as part of diplomatic outreach in the Indian Ocean region.

  • This ship is a Trinket class FAC.
  • INS Tarmugli is capable of lifting up to 320 tonnes and can achieve a speed of over 30 knots.
  • INS Tarmugli is capable of operating at high speed in shallow waters.
  • It is designed for extended coastal and offshore surveillance and patrolling.
  • INS Tarmugli is also equipped with advanced MTU engines, water jet propulsion and latest communication equipment.
  • The ship is also equipped with a 30 mm gun and an advanced radar system.

It will be used extensively for coastal surveillance.
