Why in the news?

Recently India Internet Governance Forum 2023 was organized.

Important points:

• Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Shri Rajiv Chandrashekhar was also present in its inaugural session.
• The welcome address was given by Shri Sushil Pal, Joint Secretary, MeitY.
• They were also joined by dignitaries from international organizations such as the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF), Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), besides other stakeholders from civil society, private sector, technology community, think tanks, industry, etc.

About India Internet Governance Forum 2023:

• India Internet Governance Forum 2023 (IIGF-2023) is a hybrid event.
• It was organized on 5 December at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
• The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is a multi-stakeholder forum that brings together representatives from various groups to discuss public policy issues related to the Internet.
• Mr. Devesh Tyagi, Chairman of IIGF 2023 and CEO of NIXI, provided information about the findings from IIGF 2023 and marked it as an important forum associated with the United Nations Internet Governance Forum.
• Prior to IIGF 2023, the first two editions of IIGF have been successfully organized in 2021 and 2022.
• Also present at the event was Ms. Sally Costerton, Interim President and CEO of ICANN.
• Who said that ICANN is excited to work with and support the Government of India in reducing the digital divide and promoting digital inclusion.

Theme of 2023:

• Moving Forward – Calibrating India's Digital Agenda.

Objectives of India Internet Governance Forum 2023:

• The event aims to make an effort to discuss issues such as creating a secure, trustworthy and resilient cyberspace for India, enabling innovation for India's development goals, bridging the divide and calibrating India's digital agenda.

About India Internet Governance Forum:

• It was established in 2021.
• India Internet Governance Forum is an initiative of the United Nations Internet Governance Forum.
• It is supported by 14-member multi-stakeholder committees representing government, civil society, industry, technical community, think tanks, and industry.

Importance:

• The IGF facilitates a common understanding of how to maximize the opportunities of the Internet and address the risks and challenges that arise.

About the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN):

• It was established on 30 September 1998.
• Its headquarters is located in Los Angeles, California, United States.
• It is an American multi stakeholder group and non-profit organization responsible for maintaining multiple databases related to the Internet's namespaces and numerical spaces and coordinating processes and ensuring the stable and secure operation of the network.
