Mangal Pandey

  • Context (AIR): Prime Minister paid tributes to freedom fighter Mangal Pandey on his birth anniversary.
  • Served as a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry; celebrated as a key hero of 1857 Revolt.
  • Spearheaded the Barrackpore Uprising (29 March 1857), attacking British officers over controversial tallow-greased Enfield cartridges.
  • Court-martialled and hanged by East India Company; his martyrdom ignited India's First War of Independence.

 

National Commission for Minorities

  • Context (TH): Harjit Singh Grewal was named Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) for three years.
  • Statutory body under NCM Act, 1992 (Ministry of Minority Affairs); excludes linguistic minorities (Article 350B).
  • Comprises a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and 5 Members representing six notified communities: Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, Jains.
  • Possesses civil court powers to investigate rights violations, evaluates minority welfare, and submits annual reports to Parliament.

 

 

Revised Index of Core Industries (ICI)

  • Context (PIB): Ministry of Commerce and Industry launched revised ICI with 2022-23 base year; registered 5% growth (June 2026).
  • Expanded from eight to nine industries by adding iron ore (4.905% weight); combined IIP weight reduced to 32.88%.
  • Electricity holds highest weight (30.932%), followed by refinery products; metric refined to raw coal to avoid double-counting.
  • Driven by iron ore (43.9%) and power, despite declines in natural gas, refinery products, crude oil, and fertilisers.

 

Karivalamvanthanallur Excavations

  • Context (IE): Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology is excavating Karivalamvanthanallur along the Vaippar River in Tenkasi district.
  • Reveals unbroken habitation from Microlithic straight into Iron and Early Historic ages, completely bypassing Neolithic and Chalcolithic phases.
  • Uncovered a 2,500-year-old brick stepwell, peacock-painted burial urns, perforated bowls, and distinct black-and-red ware pottery.
  • Sixth Tamil Nadu site yielding high-tin bronze; copper coins and graffiti pottery prove its location on ancient Madurai trade routes.

 

 

Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)

  • Context (IE): Argentina's 2026 FIFA World Cup celebration banner revived its long-standing sovereignty dispute with the United Kingdom.
  • British Overseas Territory in South Atlantic; comprises East and West Falkland (separated by Falkland Sound), capital Stanley.
  • UK position: Administers since 1833; claims sovereignty via self-determination following a 99.8% vote in 2013 referendum.
  • Argentina position: Claims succession from Spain (1816); deems 1833 takeover illegal, citing UN resolutions on territorial integrity.

 

 

Qdenga Dengue Vaccine

  • Context (PIB): CDSCO approved Qdenga, marking India’s first dengue vaccine, developed by Japan's Takeda Pharmaceuticals.
  • A live-attenuated, tetravalent vaccine designed to protect against all four dengue virus serotypes (Flavivirus genus).
  • Administered in two doses three months apart for individuals aged 4 to 60, requiring no pre-vaccination screening.
  • Targets Aedes mosquito-borne transmission in India, which currently bears one-third of global dengue infections.
