Why in the news?
The Union Cabinet recently approved a tribal university Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University in Telangana at a cost of Rs 889 crore.
About
- This university fulfills a commitment made by the Central government under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, to establish tribal universities in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
- The university aims to promote tribal education and culture, further connecting the academic and cultural significance of the Sammakka-Sarakka legend.
Significance
- The new university will not only increase access and improve the quality of higher education in the state.
- The new university promotes avenues of higher education and advanced knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in tribal art, culture, and traditional knowledge systems for the benefit of the tribal population in the state.
- The formation of this new university will create additional capacity and will strive to remove regional imbalances.
Sammakka Saralamma Jatara or Medaram Jathara
- It is the largest tribal religious congregation in the country.
- It is a biennial tribal festival celebrated in Medaram, Telangana.
- It is often referred to as the "Kumbh Mela of the tribals" and has gained recognition for its cultural and spiritual significance.
- It was declared a State Festival in 1996.
