Why in the news?
Recently, chip designer company Qualcomm has announced a partnership with Google to make wearable devices like smartwatches using chips based on RISC-V technology.
About RISC-V Technology:
- It is an open-source technology called "Risk Five".
- The number five refers to the number of generations of RISC architecture that were developed since 1981 at the University of California, Berkeley.
- It is an open-source instruction set architecture (ISA) used for the development of custom processors targeting a variety of end applications.
- RISC-V technology can be used as a key component for anything from smartphone chips to advanced processors for artificial intelligence.
- It is considered to be the fifth generation of processors built on the concept of Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC).
- It was started as a project at UC Berkeley to create an open-source computer system based on RISC principles.
- It was initially designed for educational use.
How RISC-V technology works.
- As an open-standard architecture, RISC-V is defined by member companies of RISC-V International, the global non-profit organization behind the ISA.
- It consists of a small core set of instructions on which all the software in the design runs.
- This architecture allows designers to customize and build their processors in a way that suits their target applications.
Benefits of RISC-V technology:
- This technology will benefit the entire value chain, including chip vendors, OEMs, device manufacturers and users.
- The entire RISC-V architecture can be examined closely in the public domain.
Application:
- wearable, industrial, IoT, and home devices, smartphones, automotive, high-performance computing (HPC), and data centers.
About Qualcomm:
- Qualcomm Incorporated is an American multinational semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company.
- It is headquartered in San Diego, California, United States
- Designs and markets wireless telecommunications products and services.
