Why in news:

India is ranked 40th among 132 countries in the ranking of Global Innovation Index (GII), 2023 published by the World Intellectual Property Organization.

      

important point:

  • According to NITI Aayog, India has been rising rapidly in the global innovation index for the last several years. From 81st position in 2015, it has reached 40th position this year.
  • The Global Innovation Index 2023 was launched by India in partnership with NITI Aayog, CII and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), on 29 September 2023.

What is the Global Innovation Index?

  • Published each year, the Global Innovation Index is a reliable means for governments around the world to assess innovation-led social and economic changes in their respective countries.
  • This is the 16th edition of the Global Innovation Index 2023.

India in Global Innovation Index 2023?

  • India ranked 40th in the Global Innovation Index 2023, a significant rise from 81st in 2015.
  • This surge refers to India's sustained and substantial growth in innovation over the last eight years.
  • India has secured the top position among 37 lower-middle income countries.
  • The steady improvement in global innovation rankings is due to the vast knowledge capital, vibrant start-up ecosystem and amazing work done by public and private research organizations.
  • India was also ranked 40th in the Global Innovation Index 2022.

Highlights of Global Innovation Index, 2023:

Most innovative economies in 2023:

  • The most innovative economy according to the Global Innovation Index, 2023 is Switzerland (13th consecutive year), followed by Sweden, United States, United Kingdom and Singapore respectively.
  • Singapore has entered the top five innovative economies, and ranked first among economies in the Southeast Asia, East Asia and Oceania (SEAO) region.

Top Science and Technology (S&T) Clusters in the World:

  • The world's top science and technology innovation clusters in 2023 are Tokyo-Yokohama, followed by Shenzhen (China), Hong Kong-Guangzhou, Seoul (South Korea), Beijing and Shanghai-Suzhou.
  • S&T clusters are the regions of the world with the highest number of inventors and scientific writers.
  • In this group, China ranks first in the world with 24 clusters and America ranks second with 21 clusters. India has only 4 S&T clusters in the world's top 100. These are Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi.

About World Intellectual Property Organization:

  • The World Intellectual Property Organization was created to promote and protect intellectual property (IP) around the world by collaborating with international organizations.
  • It is a self-financing agency of the United Nations with 193 member states.
  • It is one of the 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations.
  • Its objective is to lead the development of a balanced and effective international IP system that enables innovation and creativity for the benefit of all.
  • Its mandate, governing bodies and procedures are set out in the WIPO Convention, which established WIPO in 1967.
  • Its operation started on 26 April 1970.
