06.11.2025

  1. First Export of Fortified Rice Kernel

Context
In November 2025, APEDA enabled India’s first export of 12 metric tonnes of Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK) from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica, showcasing India’s progress in food fortification, agricultural innovation, and nutrition-led exports.

About the News

What is Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK)?
FRK is nutritionally enriched rice produced by blending rice flour with micronutrients such as iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. Using extrusion technology, it retains the look and taste of natural rice while boosting nutritional value.

Key Features:

  • Micronutrient Enrichment: Helps combat anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies.

  • Blending Ratio: Mixed with normal rice in a 1:100 ratio for uniform fortification.

  • Technological Innovation: Made using advanced extrusion and blending systems.

  • Global Compliance: Meets international food safety standards for smooth export certification.
