Why in the news?
Recently, the Lok Sabha Speaker referred the complaint against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra to the Ethics Committee of the House.

About the Ethics Committee in Parliament:
- The origins of the formation of the Ethics Committee in Parliament can be traced to a resolution adopted at the Conference of Presiding Officers held in New Delhi in October, 1996.
- Any person or member can make a complaint regarding unethical conduct of a member to the Ethics Committee in Parliament.
- Only one MP can be investigated for misconduct in the Parliamentary Ethics Committee.
- Whereas both MPs and non-MPs can be charged with breach of privilege by the Privileges Committee.
- Each House of Parliament has its own Ethics Committee.
Ethics Committee in Lok Sabha:
- It was first formed in 2000.
- Composition: It consists of not more than fifteen members and is nominated by the Chairman.
- Tenure: They will hold office for a period not exceeding one year.
- The current chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Lok Sabha is BJP member Vinod Kumar Sonkar.
Ethics Committee in Rajya Sabha:
- It was formed in 1997.
- Composition: It consists of 10 members nominated by the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
- Tenure: They will hold office for a period not exceeding one year.
Work:
- To monitor the moral and ethical conduct of members;
- To investigate cases referred to them in respect of moral and other misconduct of members.
Punishment by Committee:
- The committee may recommend the imposition of one or more sanctions such as censure, reprimand and suspension for a specific period.
- This could be for alleged unethical behavior or violation of the code of conduct by a member or alleged misinformation.
- Any person can make a complaint in the committee or the committee can also take up cases suo motu.
