|
Why in the news?
Recently Ethanol 100 fuel was launched by Petroleum Minister Hardeep S Puri.
Important points:
- Ethanol 100 fuel has the potential to transform our transportation sector and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
- This reflects the government's commitment to reduce import dependence, conserve foreign exchange and promote the agriculture sector.
About Ethanol 100:
- Contrary to popular belief, E100 fuel is not 100 percent ethanol.
- As per the specifications, E100 fuel consists of 93-93.5 percent ethanol mixed with 5 percent petrol and 1.5 percent co-solvent, which is a binder.
- Customers can now avail Ethanol 100 at select 183 retail outlets across five states – Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, New Delhi and Tamil Nadu.
- Currently, the price of E100 is similar to petrol – Rs 94.72/litre in Delhi, Rs 104.21/litre in Maharashtra and Rs 100.75/litre in Chennai. However, with widespread adoption of the fuel, E100 will certainly be cheaper than petrol or diesel because ethanol is cheaper.
- Moreover, the government's keenness to promote biofuels that help in import substitution of crude oil is also likely to make it competitive compared to conventional fuels.
- Ethanol is made from agricultural feedstock, which also provides income to farmers, making them stakeholders in the decarbonization of the economy.
- E100 can be used as fuel in any flex fuel engine car. A flex fuel engine car is designed to run on a variety of fuels.
- It is equipped with an internal combustion engine (ICE) that can run on petrol or ethanol or methanol, giving consumers a choice when it comes to fuel sales.
- Ethanol 100 stands out as a clean, green alternative, claiming to emit less greenhouse gasses and pollutants, thus helping combat climate change and enhancing air quality.
- With its high-octane rating, typically between 100-105, ETHANOL100 proves to be ideal for high-performance engines, ensuring superior efficiency and power output while reducing environmental impact.
