Why in the news?
Since the announcement of General Elections 2024, over 79,000 violations have been reported so far through the C-VIGIL app.
Important points:
- Election Commission of India's CVigil app has become an effective tool in the hands of people to flag violations of the election code of conduct.
- More than 79,000 complaints have been received till date since the announcement of General Elections 2024.
- More than 99% of the complaints have been resolved and about 89% of these complaints have been resolved within 100 minutes. More than 58,500 complaints (73% of the total) received are against illegal hoardings and banners.
- More than 1400 complaints received were related to distribution of money, gifts and liquor. About 3% of complaints (2454) are related to defacement of property.
- Speed and transparency are the cornerstone of the cVigil app.
About C-Vigil App:
- The term 'C-Vigil' stands for Vigilant Citizens, which emphasizes the active and responsible role of citizens in the conduct of free and fair elections.
- C-Vigil App is an innovative mobile application launched by the Election Commission of India.
- C-Vigil is part of ECI's steps to leverage digital technology to ensure free, fair and inducement-free elections.
- It allows citizens to report Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations and expenditure violations during elections.
- The app provides time-stamped evidentiary proof of violations, including live photos/videos along with auto location data.
- This unique combination of live photos with time stamping, auto location can be heavily relied upon by the election machinery to navigate to the right location and take quick action.
- The app has been designed to create a fast-track complaint reception and redressal system.
- It also includes a GIS-based dashboard that provides a robust decision tool to weed out and dispose of redundant and unrelated cases before they are processed.
