Why in the news?

      Recently, Honorable Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shri R.K. Singh participated in the 22nd Foundation Day celebrations of Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in New Delhi.

 

Important points:

  • The role of e-mobility in energy transition and the potential of the Indian carbon market in decarbonization were discussed at the 22nd Foundation Day Celebrations of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
  • Government and industry stakeholders were invited to its main event held in New Delhi on March 1, 2024.
  • Two standards and labeling programs of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency were launched on the occasion of 22nd Foundation Day.
    • One for packaged boilers and the other for commercial beverage coolers, also known as visi coolers (or beverage coolers).
    • Packaged boiler is a factory-built ready-to-use boiler, used for all process industries requiring steam and hot water.

 

Theme of 22nd Foundation Day:

  • The theme of the 22nd Foundation Day is “Energy Transformation in India through Electrification and Decarbonization”.

 

About Bureau of Energy Efficiency:

  • The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has been established under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.
  • This organization was established in March 2002 under the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act 2001.
  • It is a statutory body.
  • Its main objective is to institutionalize energy efficiency services so that awareness of energy efficiency is created in all areas of the country.
  • The major function of this organization is to encourage efficient use of energy in India by developing programs and strategies that promote energy conservation.

 

Importance of Bureau of Energy Efficiency:

  • BEE is one such organization which has reduced our carbon burden significantly. BEE efforts have resulted in a reduction of about 3.5% in India's energy consumption.
  • It is because of BEE that India has achieved its NDC target of reducing the emissions intensity of GDP, 11 years ahead of target.

 

Major initiatives taken by Bureau of Energy Efficiency:

  • Standards and labeling scheme.
  • Energy Conservation Building Code.
  • Energy efficiency in large industries.
  • Energy efficiency in small and medium scale industries.
  • Release of State Energy Efficiency Index by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in India.
  • National Energy Conservation Award.
  • Awareness Campaigns: BEE keeps running campaigns to increase awareness about energy efficiency.
  • Demand Side Management (DSM): The Bureau of Energy Efficiency focuses on managing energy demand through a variety of strategies.
  • Performance, Achievement and Trade (PAT): This program targets energy-intensive industries and encourages them to achieve specific energy-saving targets.
