Why in news:

Recently, Basohli Pashmina, an over 100 years old traditional craft from Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

      

important point:

  • The Department of Industries and Commerce in collaboration with NABARD Jammu and Human Welfare Association, Varanasi played an important role in obtaining GI tag for Basohli Pashmina.
  • Earlier this year, the famous Basohli painting and Chikri wood of Rajouri district of Jammu division also received the GI tag status.

 

About Basohli Pashmina:

  • Basohli Pashmina is a hand spun product known for extreme softness, fineness and light weight, insulation properties and long utility.
  • Pashmina products include shawls, mufflers, blankets and baskets for both men and women.
  • It is obtained from a breed of mountain goats (Capra hircus) found in the Changthang Plateau of Tibet and parts of Ladakh.
  • The traditional producers of pashmina wool in the Ladakh region are the people known as Changpa (nomadic people living in the Changthang Plateau of Tibet).

 

About Geographical Indication (GI Tag).

  • It is a mark used on products that have a specific geographical origin.
  • And they have quality or reputation.
  • It is commonly used for agricultural products, foodstuffs, wine and spirit beverages, handicrafts and industrial products.
  • The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 seeks to provide for registration and better protection of Geographical Indications relating to goods in India.

GI tag is valid for 10 years, after which it can be renewed.
