Big Changes In India Due to Artificial Intelligence

This topic is related to Current Affairs for IAS/PCS Prelims and Mains Exam General Studies Paper 3 Science and Technology

Sept. 07, 2023

Why In News:

  • India's first 3D printed post office was recently inaugurated by Union Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnav.

3D Printed Post Office:

Main points:

  • It is the first commercial building in India to use 3D printing technology.
  • This post office was inaugurated at Cambridge Layout in East Bangalore.
  • The built up area of this post office is 1,000 sq.ft.
  • This post office was constructed by Larsen & Toubro Limited Construction Company with 3D concrete printing technology.
  • The structural framework of this post office has been prepared by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.
  • The 3D printing technology used in this post office was imported from Denmark.

About 3D Printing:

  • 3D Printing is basically a technology of manufacturing using which, three dimensional objects are created.
  • For this basically a three dimensional object is designed in digital format.
  • After this it is obtained in physical form through 3D printer.
  • Where ink and pages are required in a simple printing machine, in this printing machine, the size, color, etc. of the object to be printed is determined and substances are added accordingly.

Analysis:

  • Artificial intelligence is a medium, it can be used in more or less all aspects of society and individual.
  • In the areas where its use is not visible at present, it will not be used in future, hardly any sensible person will accept this.
  • For example, in the public function of Republic Day for the last several years, the use of searching terrorists through CCTV cameras is going on only on the basis of artificial intelligence, which can alert the security personnel in the police control room about the public presence and activity of pre-identified terrorist or criminal by facial recognition.
  • Similarly, an experiment is being started by the Railways, in which it can send a signal to the security personnel on the possibility of theft of passengers' luggage by attaching it to it.
  • In this sequence, on the basis of artificial intelligence, it is possible to build sea bridge and boundary wall on the border on the basis of a map in the country through 3D printing.
  • Doctor's cooperation in the treatment by making a person's tooth or leg bone and the work of benefiting the patients is being done.
  • Today commercial involvement of artificial intelligence can be found in the development and automation of almost every industry. Therefore, it is difficult to estimate the exact figures of its prevalence in the country, but last February, citing NASSCOM, the government told the Parliament that artificial intelligence in India is estimated to create employment for about 4,16,000 professionals.
  • In addition, artificial intelligence is expected to contribute an additional US$ 957 billion to India's economy by 2035.
  • Compared to 2020 in its current global market, private investment had increased by 103 percent to $ 96.5 billion in 2021. In the US alone, the demand for AI-based skilled people in industries and businesses has increased rapidly. The demand for such people increased tenfold between 2010 and 2019.
  • However, there is a need to be careful with this in the Indian context, because in these situations the need for skilled workers will remain, but the struggle for employment of unskilled workers will increase further.
  • Not only this, when automation will increase in product-manufacturing of small businesses, there will be large-scale retrenchment of unskilled or incompetent people on the standards of need, which is often heard nowadays.
  • It should not be forgotten that even today, among all modes of transport, the hand-pulled rickshaw remains in Kolkata on the same logic that the skill of such rickshaw pullers is best in this work. It is also a compulsion along with the only means of their livelihood.
  • Out of the country's population of about 150 crores, a large number of people are connected to the digital world in one way or the other and every connection is creating digital resources, which are being freely exploited by private companies.

Significance of 3D Printing Technology:

  • This technology will give a new look to small and cottage industry along with infrastructural development.
  • In the coming years, three-dimensional i.e. 3D printing technology can initiate a radical change in the field of manufacturing in a developing country like India.
  • It will reduce both cost and time, as well as manufacturing can be done at remote and inaccessible places with minimum risk.
  • The number of such ventures to manufacture bone parts of animals, toys, home decor items, furniture, utensils, etc. along with humans will grow rapidly and traditional machines will gradually be left behind and the role of digital technology will increase .
  • Variety and attractiveness in the design and appearance of products will increase further.
  • There will be increasing pressure from consumers to re-think industries trend of mass production from a single mold.
  • There is every possibility of becoming the basis of a new industrial revolution.
  • According to UNCTAD's Technology and Innovation Report – 2023, the market for 3D printing is growing rapidly. Globally, its value was $ 12 billion in 2020, which is expected to increase to $ 51 billion by 2030.
  • Also this industry will create three to five million new skilled jobs in total.
  • In this sequence, the demand for supporting jobs is also increasing rapidly, because the industry will need engineers, software developers, material scientists along with sales, marketing and other experts.

Conclusions:

  • Continuous changes are taking place in the digital world, but the work of its regulation is still being carried out by the rule made in the year 2000. However, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 has just been passed by the Parliament, in which there has been talk of forming the Data Protection Board of India.
  • Time will tell how this board will protect Indian digital data resources and privacy, but in what form is our fundamental participation in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence market, this is worth considering, so that as the country with the largest population and highest internet data consumption in the world, our role is not limited to just laborers or buyers. If these measures are not swiftly implemented today, it will neither be justice over time nor will there be separate global recognition of our capabilities.
