In News:

  • Recently, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has launched the "Adopt a Heritage 2.0" program in line with the vision of 'Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi', which aims to protect and showcase India's rich cultural heritage.

Key points:

  • The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has also launched the Indian Heritage App and e-permission portal on 4 September 2023 in addition to the “Adopt a Heritage 2.0” programme.
  • ASI has launched this program in association with corporate stakeholders for conservation of famous monuments of the country.
  • Presently, there are 3696 monuments under the protection of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) across the country.
  • These monuments display the rich cultural heritage of India and also play an important role in promoting economic development.

About the 'Adopt a Heritage 2.0' programme:

  • This program was launched in 2017 which is a new version of the previous scheme (Adopt a Heritage).
  • This program implements the rules and guidelines of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act (AMASR), 1958 for the conservation and maintenance of various monuments.
  • The objective of this program is to promote collaboration with corporate stakeholders through which they can contribute to the conservation of these monuments for the next generations.
  • Its duration will initially be for five years, which can be extended for further five years.

About Indian Heritage App and e-Permission Portal:

Indian Heritage App:

  • All the historical monuments of India will be displayed in this app.
  • The app will feature state-wise details of monuments with photographs, list of public facilities available at the monuments, geo-tagged locations and feedback mechanism for citizens.

E-Permission Portal:

  • This portal provides permission for photography, filming and developmental projects at the monuments.
  • This portal will fast track the process of obtaining various permissions and resolve operational and logistics bottlenecks.

About ‘Adopt a Heritage’ Scheme:

  • It is a collaborative effort between Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture, Archaeological Survey of India and State/Union Territory Governments.
  • The scheme was launched by the President of India on 27 September 2017 (World Tourism Day).

Objective:

  • To develop synergy among all the stakeholders for promoting 'Tourism' effectively.
  • Involvement of public sector companies, private sector companies and corporate citizens/individuals to make the country's heritage and tourism more sustainable.
  • To address the common challenges heritage sites face mainly related to operation and maintenance of various infrastructure as well as service assets.
  • To develop a robust mechanism for provision of infrastructure and advanced facilities on a long-term basis.
