Why in the news?
Russia's government recently published new footage claiming to show the targeting of two Ukrainian High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).
About High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS):
- It is a light, multiple rocket launchers.
- It was developed in 1996 by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control under an advanced concept technology demonstration (ACTD) programme.
- It is intended to engage and defeat artillery, air defense concentrations, trucks, light armour, and personnel carriers, as well as support troop and supply concentrations.
Features:
- It is an air-transportable wheel launcher mounted on a 5-ton Family of Medium Tactical Vehicle (FMTV).
- It can carry a launcher pod of six rockets or one MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), with a range of 300 km (186 miles).
- It requires less than 20 seconds to prepare for firing and a full launcher load of six rockets can be fired in 45 seconds.
- The system launches its weapons before enemy forces locate the launch site and moves away from the area at high speed.
- It is equipped with an increased crew protection cabin, designed to protect the three-man operating crew against plume gas, rocket launch debris and small arms.
About Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS)
- It is one of the most potent missile systems constructed through US-primarily based fingers manufacturer Lockheed Martin.
- It is a surface-to-surface artillery weapon system.
- Its biggest strengths are the long-range of assault, ability to herd cluster munitions, and the weapon device’s mobility.
- The missiles have been part of a $300 million navy aid package deal for Ukraine.
- This weapon’s known operators other than the US are Bahrain, Greece, South Korea, Taiwan, and United Arab Emirates.
